Life is Like Supper

It’s supper time. You have a plate in front of you with meat, potatoes, and vegetables. How do you eat it? More importantly, how do “I” eat it?

Glad you asked…

I begin with the meat. I eat all of it. Then I move to the taters. I eat all of them. Lastly (and leastly) I eat all the veggies. I have never thought to eat things this way, but I have always eaten this way.

Why? I can’t entirely say. What I can relate though, is that I’ve begun to realize that this process is not limited to the way I eat. This, more or less, is the way I live. It’s the way I work, it’s the way I relax, it’s the way I exist; One thing at a time to completeness, then on to the next. I cannot relax before my work is done, and I cannot work until I’ve geared up completely with my morning routine. I cannot begin a new television show until I’ve completed the entire series I’m already engaged with, which often means I suffer through hours of drudgery.

This thought of drudgery brings me to my next realization:

How often is my process, though seemingly efficient and perfectly compartmentalized, actually a means to merely complete for the sake of completing? I’ve begun to realize that I’m perhaps not the best at trimming the fat and cutting my losses…or even being aware of trimmable fat at all.

I do hope this new awareness serves.

I think I’ll try to make a stew tonight.
